Lesson From EES Art Teacher Joanna Elliott Published in Scholastic Teacher

This month’s issue of Scholastic Teacher features an article interviewing art teacher Joanna Elliott and highlights a recent science and art lesson completed with EES first graders.

The article describes the goals and benefits of integrating academic content into the art room, and conversely, how integrating art into homerooms increases both access to the content knowledge and offers students different ways to show their thinking.

Here is an excerpt from Scholastic Teacher:

“It’s joyful,” says Joanna Elliott, an arts integration specialist in Burlington, Vermont. “Exploring academic curriculum with hands-on making gives a huge confidence boost to visual learners, and it builds buzz and excitement.”
