The students learned that Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of fighting in World War I. The date was chosen because Armistice occurred at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. In 1954, President Eisenhower changed the observance from Armistice Day to Veteran's Day to recognize all Veterans who had served the country. Some artifacts from World War I were shared including a medal and a French Phrase Book that belonged to Dr. Mathias' great uncle. We talked briefly about the branches of the service as well as the fact that both men and women served. We also sang the National Anthem.
We share about traditions surrounding days of remembrance like Veterans Day so that our students have an understanding of important days in our country and their significance. It also helps to teach how to be respectful during any national observance, regardless of the country or the occasion. .
